Refresh Vst Plugins Cubase

In Cubase, the Native Instruments software is used via the VST plug-in interface. In order to use your NI plug-ins in Cubase 8, you must ensure that Cubase scans the folders where your NI VST plug-ins are located. This article describes this procedure for both Mac and Window systems.

  • This is useful if you have plug-ins installed that you do not want to use in Cubase. Plug-in Manager Settings. Opens a section at the bottom of the window in which all current paths to VST 2 plug-ins are listed. You can add or remove folder locations by using the corresponding buttons. Click Rescan All to rescan your computer for plug-ins.
  • /Applications/Cubase 9.5.app./Contents/Project Templates (Right-click on Cubase resp. Nuendo in the Applications folder, select 'Show packet contents' from the context menu. Templates for specific hardware /Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Project Templates; Further Steinberg presets (Logical Editor, MIDI-Plug-ins, Input Transformer).

This article explains how to set up Touché or Touché SE to work within Steinberg Cubase 9 and 10.

Scanning Lié inside Cubase

Cubase scans its plug-in database on every launch.

In macOS, Cubase will scan the default folder for VST plug-ins, which contains Lié.vst.

In Windows, our Lié installer will place Lie.dll (the plug-in file in VST2 format) in C:Program FilesVstplugins by default.

If you defined another folder where your VST2 plug-ins are located and expected by Cubase, you could manually move the Lie.dll to this folder to make sure it is recognized. Or you just add C:Program FilesVstplugins to the folders that are scanned by Cubase. You can define the list of scanned folders here:

Studio -> VST Plug-in Manager

  • Click on the gear icon in the bottom left corner. VST 2 Plug-in Path Settings will open.
  • Click on the '+' icon to select and add the folder Lié.dll is located at.
  • Click the Refresh All button (the circling arrows) to manually rescan the plug-in database.

For more information on the subject, read articles directly from Steinberg: steinberg.help - Plug-in Manager Window

Enabling MIDI Input from Touché (SE)

  • Go to Studio -> Studio Setup -> MIDI Port Setup and activate 'In 'All MIDI' button for In TOUCHE (yellow).

Note: Please do not activate MIDIIN2 (TOUCHE) as MIDI input, since this would interfere with the recognition system between Lié and the Touché hardware.

Loading Lié in a track

  • Add a new Instrument Track and choose Lie from the dropdown list.
  • Make sure that the new track has 'All MIDI Inputs' activated for its MIDI input. This way it will both accept notes from your keyboard as well as parameter changes from your Touché (SE).
  • Activate the 'Record Enable' button of the track.

Editing automations

You will find the automation that you recorded as Controller Lanes within the MIDI Part.

Update Vst Plugins Cubase 5

  • Double-click on the MIDI Part that you recorded.
  • In the Lower Zone, below the Piano Roll, you will find the Controller Lanes that were created
  • Choose the following entries from the dropdown menu:
    • CC 16 (Gen Purp)
    • CC 17 (Gen Purp)
    • CC 18 (Gen Purp)
    • CC 19 (Gen Purp)
  • Click on the '+' below, if you want to have several lanes open at once.

Mapping directly with Cubase's Track Quick Controls

In order to control other parameters than those of VST instruments hosted inside Lié, you could still use Touché (SE) as a MIDI class compliant controller in Cubase.

  • Go to Studio -> Studio Setup -> Track Quick Controls
  • Set TOUCHE as MIDI Input.
  • Add all the axes on Touché that you want to map as QuickControls in the list (Controller 16/17/18/19). Attention: As long as an axis of Touché SE is assigned in Quick Controls, this axis won't be able to get through to control Lié anymore.
  • Use the Quick Controls as described by Steinberg: steinberg help - Track Quick Controls

A track's Quick Controls are only active when it is record enabled.

After some time of working with Cubase or Nuendo you may experience some odd symptoms:

  • Slow save times
  • Odd graphical glitches
  • Slow exit times
  • Media bay anomalies
  • New plugin versions not showing up
  • And any number of other oddities

There is one thing that is always worth trying before resorting to technical support or getting upset and posting to the forum. You’ve heard it a million times but may have thought it is too complicated to try…

Trashing Preferences!

I prefer to call it A Preference Refresh

Cubase Vocal Plugins

It can be a daunting thought. You are going to delete all your Cubase or Nuendo settings and start from scratch. However, there are some things that can be done to make it easier and you won’t lose everything. In fact you won’t lose very much at all. Here’s the steps – in this example we will be using Cubase 7 64 Bit Version and you should set aside 30 minutes to do this carefully and without rushing:

Backup

Naturally it is a good idea to backup your existing settings. If you like you can use my Windows SB Prefs Backup Tool.

Or you can do it manually…

Navigate to your Steinberg Application Data folder (you may have to turn on View Hidden Items to view this folder). The easy way to find this is to type:

Copy and paste this into a Windows File Explorer window.

It should be fairly obvious which application folder you will be dealing with. For example Cubase 7 64 Bit Version’s settings are stored in CUBASE 7_64

Save Current Prefs

Open Cubase / Nuendo and go to File > Preferences and store your current settings.

These can be found later here:

Save them with a descriptive name and date. For example: 2013.March.21.C7.Phil

Delete

Now we navigate back to the settings folder:

There is no need to simply delete ALL the Cubase 7_64 folder. We can look inside the folder and just delete some specific things. And there is no need to worry because we have everything backed up already.

Inside the Cubase 7_64 folder you will see a number of other folders AND a number of files.

It is only the files that we need to remove. And in fact, not even all of those files need to be removed. For example if you have no problems with Media Bay then you can keep the Media Bay database files.

I prefer to delete everything, knowing that it may take a short while to reconfigure afterwards.

Note: One file I usually keep is my Key Commands.xml file. Although your key commands can also be saved and reloaded from the File > Key Commands area.

Refresh Vst Plugins Cubase Plugins

So you should now be left with no files in the folder but still have a bunch of other folders.

Rebuild

Rebuilding blank settings is simply a matter of starting Cubase / Nuendo. The application may try and grab settings from an earlier version, if you feel this may be a problem then you can temporarily rename the settings folder for the earlier version until you have loaded your application.

Reload

Now your Cubase or Nuendo is loaded you will find things probably look rather different from before but getting back to how you left off should not be a big task.

Cubase 10 Plugins

If you are greeted with a warning about Audio Outputs and Inputs missing – it is probably because your sound has been reset to the default Multimedia driver. Go and reselect the correct ASIO driver in Devices > Device Setup.

Also, if you use Control Room you may have to switch it back on. Devices > VST Connections.

Open Cubase / Nuendo and go to File > Preferences.

In the drop down list, you should find that the settings you stored earlier are still available. So selected that and hit Apply / OK. It is always worth going through the actual preferences as some of them don’t save correctly and there may be something you wish to tweak.

There may be one or two other things that have reset. Mixer layout seems to reset but not Mixer Settings.

Check plugin settings too, as in this walk-through we deleted some of the plugin configuration files to force a re-scan of plugins and recognise any newer plugin versions.

If you deleted the media Bay files then you will have to rescan your media folders.

Now load up your default project and see if you feel there is any improvement. 99% of the time there will be a noticeable difference.

Note – If you want to try Cubase 7 with temporarily fresh settings – You can hold down Ctrl+Shift+Alt when launching the application.

Thanks for reading, I hope this was helpful.
